Seva Zistanê/Shab-e Yalda/Winter Solstice/The Longest Night is celebrated in many cultures around the world.
“Since the night is the longest in the year, ancient tribes in Kurdistan believed that it was the night before a victory of light over darkness and signified a rebirth of the Sun.”
Families make feasts, kids get sweets and treats, we read poetry and listen to live music with the people we love, and honor the rebirth of the sun. The pomegranate is also honored and seen on many peoples tables, as more than just food. It symbolizes the cycle of life.
Happy Winter Solstice, may we move forward with light, may we see the fall of darkness and the fight for freedom and liberation feel closer with each passing day.
Do you celebrate this in your culture? What are some of your favorite traditions during the Winter Solstice?
