Jewelry Is An Art Our Ancestors Started

Jewelry is an art our ancestors started. The textures, the colors, the noise a piece makes when you move, the symbolism and intention, jewelry and adornment carry purpose and meaning.

Making jewelry is something my maternal grandmother introduced me to. A memory from childhood that I hold so dear to me was sitting with her and stringing together orange peels. I think I was 4 or 5 years old. I don't see our faces when I think of this memory, I can only see our hands and the orange peels. I wonder if she remembers?

My grandmother still loves to bead and has the sweetest collection of stones. She's given me many of them, in an old tea can. I leave them in the can, in my studio, as a reminder of her and the tradition of passing things down. I wonder who taught her to bead, was it her grandmother?
